Product Description

A timeless story rediscovered by each new generation, The Diary of a Young Girl stands without peer. For both young readers and adults it continues to capture the remarkable spirit of Anne Frank, who for a time survived the worst horror the modern world has seen—and who remained triumphantly and heartbreakingly human throughout her ordeal.

Adapted by Ari Folman, illustrated by David Polonsky, and authorized by the Anne Frank Foundation in Basel, this is the first graphic edition of The Diary and includes extensive quotation directly from the definitive edition. It remains faithful to the original, while the stunning illustrations interpret and add layers of visual meaning and immediacy to this classic work of Holocaust literature.

Review

“[A] stunning, haunting work of art. . . . The comedy of the Diary—one of the book’s most charming and often overlooked aspects—shines in this form. . . . There are so many wonderful juxtapositions of text and imagery that it feels cruel to focus on only a few, but another consistent standout is the way the graphic novel conveys Anne’s fantasies and emotions—so crucial to the  Diary. . . .  This graphic adaptation is so engaging and effective that it’s easy to imagine it replacing the Diary in classrooms and among younger readers.” — The New York Times Book Review

“Mr. Folman’s has succeeded in capturing the humor and vitality of the diaries—the hilarious sarcasm, the passionate declarations, the contemplative self-reproach—without a trace of retrofitted sentimentality. He owes much to David Polonsky’s sublime illustrations. Every one of Anne’s flights of fancy finds a thrilling and ingenious visual representation. . . . A wonderful, full-page composite image of Anne in her many moods—dreamy, snarky, silly, pensive, outraged or lovesick—is a reminder that the diaries are less about a life’s senseless destruction than about a brilliant young woman eternally coming into being.” — The Wall Street Journal

Anne Frank’s Diary: The Graphic Adaptation is a masterpiece. Writer Ari Folman and illustrator David Polonsky have produced a vibrant, sensitive portrait of the icon who hid with her parents, sister and four others for two years in the annex of the building in Amsterdam that housed her father’s business. Through text and images of seamless intelligence, Anne emerges as a wryly sophisticated, maturing young lady. . . . Folman expertly balances Anne’s exterior and interior observations. While not minimizing her terrifying circumstances, he focuses more on her wisecracks than on her fears. . . . Polonsky’s extraordinary imagination and draftsmanship propel Anne’s revered diary. . . . This graphic novel is a valuable extension to all the literature that has emanated from Anne Frank’s diary.” — Hadassah Magazine

“In the handling that Folman and Polonsky give it, what happens is nothing short of a revelation . . . nothing has ever quite captured the strange, stubborn delicacy, the forlorn wistfulness, of the diary like this before . . . a genuine work of art.”  —Christian Science Monitor

Anne Frank''s immortal journal gets a new visual energy from David Polonsky''s breathtaking artwork. The story is devastating as ever, with Anne''s romantic yearnings, adolescent rebellion and razor-sharp wit still shining through.” — Family Circle

“How does one breathe new life into a tale that is now so familiar that it risks losing its power to shock and instruct? Folman and Polonsky, the duo behind the film Waltz with Bashir, use the right tools to show us how it''s done. Some may ask why Anne Frank''s story needs a graphic adaptation, but the beauty of these pages provides the answer. It gives readers a strong visual idea of what Anne''s secret annex behind a bookcase was like, where she struggled to make sense of her short and tragic life. Another panel shows a hypothetical wedding day that will break your heart all over again.”   Lindsay Pereira, HuffPost

“Ari Folman, the Israeli director of Waltz with Bashir, takes the moving words of Anne Frank’s The Diary of a Young Girl and, with his Bashir art director David Polonsky, creates an engaging, poignant coming-of-age journey. With its cartoon style, imaginative storytelling and teenage Anne’s wide-eyed mood swings, this adaptation leans kid-friendly.” — USA Today

“I wanted to dislike  Anne Frank’s Diary: The Graphic Adaptation because books about Anne usually feel opportunistic or simplistic. But this comic-book version, authorized by the Anne Frank Foundation, is a monumental achievement. In large part that’s because it wears its importance lightly. . . . [I]t captures Anne’s teenage-ness: her love of drama, her rabid jealousy of her perfect sister, Margot, her appreciation of the physical comedy provided by the tacky van Daan adults. She feels like a real person, not a symbol. And there’s so much humor in these illustrations! Polonsky draws kinetically, varying panel size and bringing in little jokes and references from art history and advertising. He draws Anne with mobile, animated features and huge eyes. Folman nimbly provides historical context the original diary lacks; this version clarifies what was happening in the outside world as Anne was writing. But Folman also includes several full pages of unfiltered, unillustrated diary pages, showing real respect for Anne’s writerly voice. In an afterword, Folman says he only used 5 percent of the entire original diary; it feels like much more.” — Tablet

“Folman and Polonsky have reclaimed Anne Frank in all of her humanity, and they allow us to witness for ourselves her beauty, courage, vision and imagination, all of the qualities that make her life and early death so heartbreaking. And, in doing so, they have elevated the tools of the comic book to create an astonishing work of art.” — Jewish Journal

“Folman and Polonsky . . . focus on illuminating its humor, insight, and supporting cast in this spirited graphic adaption . . . Anne, drawn with large dark eyes, blooms like the hardiest, loveliest weed—a moody teenager whose wit, self-awareness, and rich fantasy life take center stage . . . The beauty of Anne’s life and the untarnished power of her legacy—here further elevated by Folman and Polonsky—are heartening reminders of the horror of her fate.”  Publishers Weekly, *starred review

“[W]itty, ironic, even snarky—Anne’s writing has an acerbic sense of humor. This adaptation is first and foremost a remembrance of that Anne, who, despite living a life marred by tragedy, tried by indignities, always held true to herself. Light touches of historical context, woven in through diary entries, provide necessary background without coming across as overly didactic. The whimsical nature of Polonsky’s illustrations . . . are unexpectedly moving: though we never lose sight of the gravitas of Anne’s story, these forays into fantasy, which show Anne escaping from the harsh present into a future that will never come, serve to remind us of the truly human face of genocide. This is an exceptionally graceful homage to a story that deserves to be told for years to come.” —Booklist, *starred review

“A superb offering to read alongside the original, this adaptation lets its narrator''s voice soar.”   School Library Journal

“Evocatively crafted, this comic brings Frank’s world to life for all ages but takes care to respect and prioritize the primacy of her story in her own words.”  Library Journal

“‘Even deep sleep brings no redemption,’ she writes. ‘The dreams still creep in.’ Those dreams bring out the best of the illustrations amid the depictions of the everyday confinement in which Anne, her family, and others are hiding. A different format distills and renews Frank''s achievement.” —Kirkus Reviews

“Emphasizes the visual nature of Frank’s text . . . Bring[s] renewed vigor . . . Powerful . . . points us to the very gap, between what we, her readers, can imagine for her of her missed future, and what she would never have the opportunity to live through.” —Women’s Review of Books

“Folman highlights Frank’s passionate, almost moral commitment to independence, her anthropologist’s eye, her unique psychological insight and her profound understanding that pessimism devalues life . . . Above Polonsky’s elegant illustration of the adult Frank, Folman’s version of Frank’s text makes for a piercing epigraph.”  —The Forward

“The wide range of Folman and Polonsky’s graphic ideas is mesmerizing. . . . Most strikingly of all, Polonsky takes the abundance of metaphors in the diary text literally and creates unforgettable panels that establish an expressive dimension and enable us to see the quality of Anne Frank’s writing in a fresh light.”  Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (Germany)

“A masterpiece.” Il Mattino (Italy)

“The illustrations display a serene, impressive objectivity, and when Folman and Polonsky give rein to their imaginations to provide a pictorial dimension for Anne’s feelings, they do so in an admirably skillful and charming manner . . . unfailingly striking an admirable balance that is poignant at every turn. The result is a remarkable reading and visual experience.” Frankfurter Neue Presse (Germany)

My 8 year old came up to me and said, “wow, Anne wanted to be a lesbian” after reading a particular entry about her desire to kiss and touch her friend’s breasts and that she goes into “ecstasy” when she sees nude females...be warned and maybe read it before you hand it over to your children...

My daughter has become very interested in WWII history including the Holocaust. I thought this would be a great book for her to read combining her interest with a graphic novel adaptation. I am sorry to say this book contains a lot of sexually explicit content that is definitely not appropriate for "young readers ages 8 and up". I have only included a photo of one example from the book, there are many more. Please know that even though this is a graphic novel, it is not appropriate for young children.

Very disappointed with the purchase for my 9 year old. I was looking for a version that was less mature than the original manuscript and that was NOT what we received. I am very glad that my girls and I have an open line of communication.

The artwork is very nice. The pages are glossy and made of quality paper, and it’s a well constructed, substantial book for the price. However, the book is written as if Anne Frank had the mindset of an overly sexual 16 year old living in 2020. I bought it for my very mature 10 year old daughter that has been learning about the events during World War II and the Holocaust. Puberty hit her early, and unfortunately she is having to deal with issues that go along with that. I can see horny teenage boys liking the fantasies that the main ‘character’ has about both boys and girls, but my daughter was not impressed with that aspect of the book. While some may applaud this ‘open minded’ creative license from the author, my daughter found it very puzzling. She wondered if she was in the minority for not having romantic feelings for both sexes, and it appears that was the intent of the book. It comes across as the perverse fantasies that a teenage/20s boy came up with, and not the thoughts of a young Jewish girl in the WWII era that wasn’t exposed to modern ideas of AMERICAN sexuality as it is portrayed in the media. Otherwise it is a great book, but I wouldn’t recommend it for the intended age group listed on the book. At least 14-15 years old and up, and the book should have a warning about the mature content. My parents (I’m a millennial) would have quietly made this book disappear from my bookshelf, and my grandparents would have set it on fire.

The illustrations are very nicely done; very good artwork and color scheme. The illustrations help visualize what life was like in the annex, and also give a glimpse inside Anna’s mind and show her sense of humor. On the other hand, I was left feeling that as an adult who has read the written manuscript, this illustrated version didn’t really enhance my experience. I do think, however, that it will be more useful for younger people, and for future generations, especially those who couldn’t be bothered to read her whole diary.

I was worried that this graphic adaptation would lose Anne''s spirit or not include enough of her diary. I do believe that they did a great job of selecting the most relevant and substantial entries. I do think that this method of presenting Anne''s story works and achieves its goal of garnering interest of younger generations. My students love Anne, as if she was still with us today, and I know that they are going to love this version of her diary just as much as the one they read last year. It is a triumph both in illustration and creation, and it was obviously done with a lot of love and care.

Graphic Book Review: Most of us would have read Anne Frank''s Diary while growing up and been profoundly influenced by it. It''s an amazing book/diary and perhaps without any equal before or later. When I read about a recent top 10 graphic books list and saw this as no 1, I was immediately interested. The cover page illustration looked so good. And the chance to go over Anne''s Diary in an illustrated form all over again and relive her life in captivity at one of history''s most poignant and black times was irresistible. This graphic adaptation (first authorized one) is truly among the best I have seen and I enjoyed it hugely. The imagery, illustrations, condensing many passages into graphical metaphors is just brilliant! The authors have thoughtfully retained and reproduced certain later passages in full which represent Anne''s evolved writing. The illustrations are stunning. All credit to the very talented and brilliant David Polonsky Ideally you should read the original and this one to soak it all in. But this one on its own is just as good.

Our 10-year daughter is quite historically-aware and somehow has a keen interest in the second world war. In addition, she loves to learn about women that stand out. And she is very much into graphic novels. So this was the perfect Christmas gift. The book is filled with beautiful art and is a spectacular adaptation of the Anne Frank story, that adds another dimension to the narrative. The style and colouring match the late 1903’s and war years. Our daughter already read an Anne Frank biography before so she knew the story and details (and was horrified by it). This graphic novel however it doesn’t not address nor depict the Bergen-Belsen camp part of her way too short life. It is an abbreviated version of the dairy but its captures the essence very well with the artist perfectly rendering some of the Anne’s thoughts and perceptions that she trusted to Kitty, her diary. It is a gripping story about growing up in unusual and grim circumstances, while the humanity shines through though Anne’s wit and grumpiness. The The book and its stunning art gives gloom impression of Anne’s circumstances, it is a touching visualisation of event and her thoughts, the boredom and despair. You will get cross section part of the secret annexxe “achterhuis” and god explanation fo several events during the war as well. In contrast to many comics there is a fair amount of text, but it is highly readable and a page turner. This is simply very powerful story telling. Very well done.

Anne Frank is a hero for us all. Perhaps unwittingly and unknowingly, but to read the first hand thoughts and accounts of an every day girl simply BEING an every day girl drives home that this could happen to any one of us. Anne Frank herself through her diary "Kitty" has given to us a glimpse into her very soul, as an average and wholly innocent young girl subjected to genocide. You learn to feel for this girl due to the complete honesty with which she has filled each page - and thus it hits even harder when we finally see what became of her due to the evils of Hitler and his deranged political party. From a happy girl enjoying birthday parties with her school chums, into a secret hiding place where she had to hide her existence to protect herself from lawful murder by the country her own father had served in WW1 to protect.

My 9-year-old son absolutely loves this book. I bought it as he was studying WWII at school and I thought I might con him into reading around the topic by buying the graphic novel given his love for Dog Man - but I wasn’t really expecting much, and wasn’t sure if it might still be a bit old or serious for him. But he read it from cover to cover on day one, has been carrying it round in his school bag and has since read it six more times. He says he loves everything about it, has been talking about all the issues it raises, and has asked his teacher if they can do an Anne Frank week as part of their lessons so he can share it with his friends. Plus it’s beautifully illustrated and really captures the original voice from Anne’s diary (at least as I remember it!). This graphic novel is a work of art and clearly really engaging for kids - makes history come alive! Highly recommended.

I love this book. It is a beautiful adaptation of Anne''s real diary, and while it shortened the diary a little I thought it picked out key parts to include well. The artwork was amazing; I especially liked the depictions of the residents of the annexe sitting down to eat dinner adapted as animals, of Anne''s mother, Peter''s mother and Peter''s father as fire-breathing dragons, the picture of Anne incorporated in "The Scream" by Edvard Munch and the picture of Margot incorporated in Gustav Klimt''s portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I. The artist is clearly very skilled. My favourite picture is the one of grown-up Anne reading to younger Anne. I would recommend this book to anyone aged 10+ who loves Anne Frank.
